Shrine Praying Etiquette and Procedure

1st : Place Saisen (donation) into Saisenbako (the offertory box).
2nd : Ring the bell.
3rd : Bow your head twice.
4th : Clap twice and keep your hands together upon the second clap and pray. When finished return hands to your sides.
5th : Bow your head one final time

Founded in 1835 CE during the 6th year of Emperor Tempo.
In 1912 CE, during the 45th year of Emperor Meiji and year 1 of Emperor Taisho, a man named Tanaka Ichizo uses his own money to finance the disassembling and restoration of Tenmangu.
1965, during the 40th year of Emperor Showa、the re-enshrinement of Tenmangu to its present location through a process of careful dismantlement and repair.
Significant Celebrations and Events

January 1st :
New Year’s Festival is held accompanied with Hatsumode (first shrine visit of the year) and prayers for peace and prosperity throughout the year.

January 2nd : Kakizome (the first calligraphy of the new year) is performed in which people write down what they wish to beseech from the gods. These kakizome pertain to wishes of self-betterment.
Late April : Tea Ceremony is held in which tea that has been offered to the gods is drunk and divine protection is received.

July 25th : Summer Festival is held. A Mikoshi (palanquin or portable shrine) is carried around in order to receive divine protection from the gods.
October 25th : Reisai (Annual Festival) is held. It is the year’s most important festival. Prayers for peace and prosperity are conducted.190th Anniversary Festival (2025 only)
Final Points

1: Smoking, eating and/or drinking is prohibited on shrine grounds.
2: When visiting, conduct yourself calmly and quietly.
3: Refrain from touching the trees and shrubs.
4: The correct procedure for those desiring red stamps is to first visit the Shrine (pray) then request the stamp.
Simply requesting a stamp without having approached the shrine is heavily frowned upon.
